Rates by province
The calculator uses the rates of the CRA's “GST/HST and PST rates” table (updated 1 April 2025): HST of 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island; GST of 5% in Alberta, the three territories and the provinces with their own sales tax.
Those provinces add a second tax: 9.975% QST in Quebec, 7% PST in British Columbia, 7% RST in Manitoba and 6% PST in Saskatchewan. Quebec's QST and British Columbia's PST are calculated on the price before GST, never on the GST itself; the calculator, like the invoice generator, works the same way for every second tax.
Which province to choose
Choose the province of supply. Under the CRA's place of supply rules, a sale of goods is generally made in the province where the goods are delivered, and many services in the province of the customer's address. Special rules exist for real property, telecommunications, transport and some other services: the calculator does not handle them, so pick the province yourself if one of them applies.
Before or after tax
From a price before tax, each tax is that price times its rate, rounded to the cent, and the total adds them up. From a price that already includes tax, the calculator first works out the price before tax, rounded to the cent, then the GST or HST; the last tax receives the remaining cent, so the total stays exactly the amount you typed.
Amounts follow Canadian English formats (“$1,130.00”). The Copy button puts every line, with its rate, in your clipboard.
From the calculator to an invoice
On a Canadian invoice, the generator applies the same rates once you choose the province and enter your GST/HST number, and prints the second tax on its own line. For Quebec, the GST and QST invoice guide explains in French which numbers and details an invoice shows from $100 and from $500.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the QST not charged on the GST?
Revenu Québec applies the 5% GST to the selling price, then the QST to the same price. The calculator and the invoice generator do the same.
Is Nova Scotia's HST 14% or 15%?
14% since 1 April 2025, according to the CRA's rate table. A sale made before that date used 15%: this calculator only uses the current rate.
Can I use it without a GST/HST number?
Yes, the calculator works for any amount. On an invoice, the generator only adds GST/HST once you have entered your registration number.
